APRIL 2022
I can't believe it has been 2 years since I last posted. My home practice continued throughout the pandemic however Spring feels different this year as the pace has picked up and my overseas travel has finally begun again!
I just returned from London and it felt so nice to be working in the company of such lovely children and their families. My colleague and his business partner have opened their new Center called Creating Connections and made it a welcoming space for visiting practitioners such as myself to work. I look forward to returning later this year.
I am also looking forward to returning to my "family" in Denmark in June. I have not seen them in over 2 years and after working there regularly for over a decade it has been hard to be away! I can't wait to see how the children have grown and to meet new little ones.
To the families that have continued faithfully throughout these past 2 years, I thank you and love your commitment to your child's learning. To the new families starting fresh, I welcome you and I look forward to being part of your team.
All the best, kathy
APRIL, 2020
I hope this blog post finds all of you safe and healthy! As a result of this challenging time, life has slowed down quite a bit. Spring overseas travels to work with children in London and Denmark have been cancelled and my home practice remains closed here in Pennsylvania. I look forward to the time when we can all come together again in person in the future!
I know it is important to you that your child continues growing, learning and improving. It is important to me as well, therefore I have created an opportunity for parents to experience ABMNM remotely with me to facilitate this valuable learning experience for their children. I have worked with quite a few families already in this way and it has been such a wonderful addition to the hands on lessons your child would experience one on one.
Learning ZOOM, Skype, Facetime, WhatsApp, etc. has been a bit challenging but I am now doing pretty well and love it! Of course there are glitches and difficulties with my own discoveries of learning new ways, but I am continuing to use the neuroplasticity of my own brain and that is a good thing! Helping families connect with their child while learning the fundamentals of this work and utilizing the 9 Essentials at home is very rewarding and humbling.
I received this email today after meeting with a new family from overseas for 3 sessions:
"Hi Kathy, thank you so much. It's been a pleasure to have sessions with you for both L and me! It has reminded me about a lot of things that slipped off in our busy daily routine, and helped me reconnect with L and be more positive about her and notice positive changes. And this has a great effect not just with L, but with R and Z too. Thank you so much! I hope we can work with you more, online or face-to-face. With best wishes, E"
I am forever grateful for my teacher Anat Baniel as she continues to teach us and help us grow. In mid February I was able to travel to Arizona for the first ever Children's Mastery Level 5 titled "Thinking and Cognition". Her teaching is extraordinary and she continues to upgrade practitioners with new concepts and ways to work with children.
On other notes, all is well here. My granddaughter Lizzie who brought my attention to this work when she was 5 months old is turning 16 years old this week. What an amazing journey! I love what I do and I love seeing how the children grow and evolve through the years of working with them.
All the best in health and learning!

APRIL 2018
Once again, time has passed by quickly and I am long overdue with my writing! The past year has been spent working with children in Pennsylvania, Denmark and most recently, Las Vegas at the current ABM NeuroMovement Training. I'm looking forward to presenting ABM NeuroMovement at the Five P Minus (5p-) Conference in Pittsburgh in July and meeting families and their children with Cri du Chat Syndrome.
I often schedule families that are new to ABM for a one hour consultation which includes a lesson for the child. This gives parents the opportunity to meet me and hear more about NeuroMovement and how it can help their child. We can then formulate a plan going forward which best suits the child.
I wanted to share a few emails that came in this past month after just one consultation/lesson. The parents are so aware and the changes are so profound and exciting. The learning switch comes on very quickly! And I can't wait to keep working with them.
"S (8 months old) was happier and calmer than he has been in weeks after his session today! Don't think that was what you are working on but he has been overwhelmed and irritable lately and was back to his much happier, calmer self this evening!"
"N (2 1/2 years old) did well after your lesson. We met friends and N did great at their house. He did pretty good on the ride home. He did not nap at all yesterday so he's never done that. When we got home he ate dinner and we all got in the hot tub. He moved around pushing his ball back and forth with dad. This morning he helped feed himself breakfast hand over hand and did well."
"I saw major changes in K (almost 2 years old) after just one session. Kind of amazing really. I noticed improved movement in her shoulders and chest immediately. She's running using her arms. She is happy and playful without being tickled. She actually tried to tell me something about her tantrums Monday morning. She said "Mama" then mimicked her tantrum movements calmly and explained something to me! Blew my mind. Her tantrums are less frequent, seem a little more staged now and shorter. She is also experimenting more with words. It is very interesting!"
I'm looking forward to meeting more new families this year! And of course I'm looking forward to seeing the continuing progress of all of the other children in my practices!
Be well,
kathy
FEBRUARY 2017
I have just returned from the first ABM NeuroMovement International Conference in California and it had such a profound effect on me that I feel the need to share the experience with all of you.
The keynote speakers were of the highest level in the fields of NeuroMovement, NeuroAnatomy, Pediatric Neurology, and NeuroScience. The speakers were Anat Baniel (author of Move Into Life and Kids Beyond Limits), Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor (author of My Stroke of Insight), Dr. Martha Herbert (author of The Autism Revolution) and Dr. Michael Merzenich (author of Soft Wired).
There was no doubt that ABMNeuroMovement is supported and acknowledged by everyone that spoke and the future holds great promise that one day hospitals and rehab centers will assign a NeuroMovement specialist to each person as they are sent home! The brain, of all systems of the body, has the greatest capacity for upgrading itself to higher and higher levels of organization from which it can organize and control more complex, sophisticated and refined action.
So how does this relate to you and/or your child?
First and foremost as a practitioner, I am looking to create a continuous process that upgrades the brain’s ability to self organize, and upgrade the quality and level in which it organizes all action and its ingredients, such as perception, emotion, movement, cognition etc.
While the content of each lesson is what I interact with and is necessary in order to communicate with the brain, what generates the transformational outcomes of our work and “miraculous” transformations is the brain itself reaching higher levels of organization. This is what its job is.
I look forward to hearing from many of you soon and as always, if there are questions of any kind, please do not hesitate to write or call me. I am always available and care deeply about you, your child and their process!
Be well, Kathy
OCTOBER, 2016
I came across this blog today written by a parent in 2012. I had never seen it before and it reminded me of how long I have been working (since 2007) with so many children and the amazing process and journey this method is for children and their families. After this article I reflect on my most recent experience at the ABM Center as a teacher at the 5 day Parent and Child Workshop in September.
Paraphrasing from the organization’s website, the Anat Baniel Method claims to help special needs children overcome challenges that will improve the child’s emotional, intellectual, and physical abilities. In her book, Kids Beyond Limits: Breakthrough results for children with autism, Asperger’s, brain damage, ADHD, and undiagnosed developmental delays, Baniel claims that she is not a healer or miracle worker. How exactly does she take these children beyond their limitations? Her method is a holistic approach. She applies her method via a series of sessions to connect the child’s body to the child’s mind through a type of physical manipulation.
Still not sure what the heck I’m talking about? Take a moment to visit her website and get a first-hand glimpse of her working with a child: http://www.anatbanielmethod.com/children/kids-beyond-limits
The nearest practitioner, Katherine O’Neil, is about 90 minutes from my home. After speaking to her on the phone and describing Keti’s special needs (Hypotonia, Sensory Processing Disorder with major food aversions, speech delay, gross motor delay), I made an appointment and scheduled two, same-day sessions. Still uncertain of what I was getting myself and Keti into, I made the drive through the suburbs of Philadelphia with optimism, hoping that perhaps this woman could somehow help my baby girl.
When Keti and I arrived at Kathy’s Zen-like home on a hill, we were greeted by a lovely blonde woman wearing a chic pair of glasses. She gave us a warm welcome and invited us into her work space. There was a table that looks like a massage table in the middle of the room and a very cozy couch. At first, she had me pull up a chair and sit near Keti as she began speaking to her to make sure Keti felt safe. Within a 30 seconds, it was clear that Keti felt safe with Kathy. She was making eye contact with Kathy and smiling at her. Kathy began to playing peek-a-boo with Keti and Keti laughed as Kathy doted upon her. Then she said it was all right for me to sit back on the couch.
For the next 35 minutes, Kathy worked her magic on Keti, gently working her way around her body from her shoulders to her toes. Throughout the session, Keti was cooing and at times giggling. It was very clear that she was at all times very comfortable with everything Kathy was doing. One of the most impressive things she had Keti do was to lie down on her side and to get back up on her side. This, being the proper way to rise. She showed Keti how to do it three or four times; and a few moments later when she lay Keti down on her side again, Keti rose as Kathy had taught her to. It was clear to me that Keti was receiving the input that was intended; and I left the first session thinking there is something to this method.
Two hours later we were back for the second session. Keti was back on the table and this time, Kathy had a small stepping stool on the table. She placed a pop-up toy on the table for Keti to play with while she worked on the lower half of her body. She mentioned that Keti was wound very tight in the top of her body and was very loose in the bottom of her body. “That’s the Hypotonia,” I said.
Then the most remarkable part of the sessions began to happen. While singing “The Wheels on the Bus,” Kathy, had Keti sit on the stool, her legs at a 90-degree angle. She encouraged Keti to stand up then grabbed her by the head and balanced her to a standing position. She held her head in her hands for about 30 seconds then let go and Keti stood unsupported for a few seconds then Kathy placed her hands back on Keti’s head and led her down to a sitting position.
When I asked Kathy why she was holding on to her head, she said that the head was the most important component for her to balance in order to stand and walk. If she cannot balance her head she cannot stand or walk.
Tears began to stream down my face. Keti has been cruising on furniture for five months and I’ve seen her stand unsupported just a few times until she plops down on her bottom. But what Kathy helped her do was extraordinary. Kathy said, “Oh, please don’t cry. You’re going to make me cry.”
The standing with Kathy holding Keti’s head occurred three or four more times during the session. On two occasions, sensing that Keti wasn’t ready to stand, Kathy guided Keti’s head to a sitting position rather than a standing position.
Another extraordinary moment was watching Kathy’s version of Pat-A-Cake. Instead of clapping two hands, Kathy used Keti’s left hand and right foot, then used Keti’s right hand and left foot. I could see the most curious expression on Keti’s face as Kathy sang the song and went through the motions of a song she’s heard so many, many times while using just her hands. Her facial expression said what she couldn’t: “This is different. Hey, that’s my foot and my hand!”
When the session was over, I spoke to Kathy about Keti’s leg braces and the walker. She inferred that these were impediments to Keti’s natural development. She assured me with absolute certainty, “Keti will walk. She has all of the components, she just has to put them together.” That was another moment when the tears started streaming down my face.
Suffice to say, I walked out a proponent of the Anat Baniel Method. Keti has two more sessions coming up on Saturday and two more on Monday. Kathy explained the importance of having the sessions occur in quick succession of one another. She needs the exposure to pull the attention to all the moving parts of the process"
In September 2016 I was honored to be one of 12 teachers invited to give lessons to parents and children at the ABM 5 day workshop for Parents and Children with Special Needs at the ABM Center in California. Twenty eight families from across the world brought their children ages 5 months to 15 years to the center for 5 days immersed in learning about how to interact with their children utilizing the 9 Essentials. It was an experience that brought me so much joy and immense respect for my teacher, my colleagues, the families and their children as I witnessed the transformations every day. My wish is that all across the world the Anat Baniel Method of NeuroMovement is a common therapy available to all children in all walks of life!
APRIL, 2016
2016 has been a very busy year so far! I've worked with so many amazing children and their families in California, Denmark, Istanbul, and of course Pennsylvania! And it's only April....
Since 2008 I have been traveling to Pittsburgh as often as I could to work with children. My trip across the state of Pennsylvania this past week begins an exciting new venture and renewed commitment to the families of Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio with the start of the Pittsburgh Neuro-Wellness Center. Every 6-8 weeks either myself or my ABM colleague, Mary Kliwinski, will travel across the state to work intensively with families and children for 4 days. Please contact me for scheduling and check the dates under the "Lessons for Children".
For now I'm looking forward to spending the rest of this spring with the wonderful families in my busy home practice in Doylestown. And on a personal note - my son's wedding in June!
Have a great spring and enjoy the summer!
